Home Nursing With Heart provides rehabilitation and skilled nursing services for patients following a recent hospital, rehab facility, or nursing home stay due to surgery, injury or illness. Jim Laughlin is the Chief Operating Officer of Home Nursing With Heart.

Tell us a little about your business. – Home Nursing With Heart is a locally owned, award-winning therapy and skilled nursing company. We specialize in treating cardiac, respiratory, orthopedic, and transplant patients who require post-surgery rehabilitation in their homes.

How did you get started in the business? – My wife Julie started the business 10 years ago last March. Once I finished my MBA she asked me to leave my job in IT Infrastructure sales and help run her business.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? – Learning how to move from a corporate-driven, male-dominated atmosphere to a smaller, family feel and female-dominated environment. That was a big change.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? – When I first came here 5 years ago I saw a business being run by nurses. It had no structure, no metrics being measured, and no real “go to market” strategy. They were just doing what was right and that was taking the best care of patients. I saw a great opportunity to automate processes, successfully backfill attrition, and turn around the P&L. Now we’re one of the most successful and fastest growing companies in town.

Tell us a little about your family. – I get to call one of the best people on the planet my wife. Julie’s beautiful, sweet, intelligent, a great decision maker, and is a phenomenal nurse. I have three daughters; a nurse at Creighton, a technical advisor for Lexus of Denver, and a daughter married to a youth minister in Kansas City. Julie has a daughter and son both working and going to college. Jake wants to be a police officer and Jessica is still undecided.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – I really enjoy restoring old cars and old houses, woodworking and cooking.

What are you the most proud of? – I’m most proud of having great relationships with all the people who have influenced me over the years. I’m who I am today due to the great people I’ve surrounded myself with and I stay in touch with most of them to this day when I need direction, advice or a general pep talk. They mean everything to me.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – “The harder you work the luckier you get.” So true.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? – After moving to Omaha, I really feel like success in the restaurant business would be a lot of fun and rewarding.

What local non-profit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? – I’ve always liked the Make A Wish Foundation and what they stand for. A good friend of mine is a member of the Junior Leaders group and we recently donated to their cause. I look forward to being involved with them.

What is your favorite local restaurant? – Wow…that’s a hard one because there are so many. Can anyone pick just one? The French Bulldog and Pitch in Dundee, LaBuvette and M’s in the Old Market, Lot 2, Taita and Mantra in Benson.
