Diva Mejias, in partnership with her family, owns and operates three local Liberty Tax Service offices at 2734 S. 123rd Ct., 644 N. Saddle Creek Rd., and 3302 Q Street, as well as M&M Insurance Associates, an independent insurance brokerage located inside of the Liberty Tax Service locations at 123rd Ct. and Q Street.

Tell us a little about your business. – Liberty Tax Service is a franchise, and my husband Anibal and I own the rights to three territories in Omaha. We are also getting ready to open up the first Hispanic brand of Liberty Tax Service named Siempre Tax in January 2015 as our fourth territory. M&M Insurance Associates is a partnership with our son Robert and his wife Leticia, so we are collectively able to offer tax and insurance services to our clients.

How did you get started in the business? – I worked in corporate America at UPS for 31 years and retired in May of 2010. I was bored and too young to retire, so I came to Omaha to be closer to my son and daughter and their families. In October of the same year we decided to enter into our Liberty Tax Service venture.

Tell us a little about your family. – My husband and I just celebrated our 40th anniversary and we have two children, Robert and Victoria.

Robert works in the family business and Victoria dedicates her life to her work serving the community as Director of Development at the Open Door Mission.

We have a total of six grandchildren: Sebastian, Madison, Emiliano, Jason, Isabela, and Katana.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – Read or spend time with family and friends.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? – I participated in breaking the Guinness world record at Macy’s Tapamania. Yes, tap dancing with 6,000+ other people on 34th Street in New York City!

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? – Determined!

What local non-profit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? – Open Door Mission – For every tax return we prepare, we donate a meal to one of their guests. Too many veterans and children are in poverty and go there daily for their meals. Nebraska Hispanic Chamber of Commerce – I’m currently the treasurer and am passionate about supporting the Hispanic business community. I’m also a board member for the Women’s Fund of Greater Omaha and the Metropolitan Community College Foundation as well as the current chair of Latinas Unidas and a sponsor of an annual scholarship for Women on a Mission for Change, as fostering sisterhood is very important to me.

What is your favorite local restaurant? – Cilantro’s Mexican Bar & Grill (14440 F Street in Omaha).

If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? – Warren Buffet. My grandson Sebastian took a job detasseling corn because he is saving up to buy one share of Berkshire Hathaway stock. He wants to be able to go to the shareholders meeting and ask Warren Buffet to have lunch with him and the CEO of Liberty Tax Service John Hewitt. To be a fly on the wall at that lunch, with one young man driven by two masterminds, would be an amazing thing.
