United Way of the Midlands invites students to pay tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. by writing an essay about their hopes and dreams for our community.

All entries must be received by email, regular mail or fax by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 8, 2013.

A team of volunteers will choose finalists in each grade category: Kindergarten – 3rd Grade; 4th Grade – 6th Grade; Middle school and High school.

Eligibility for the MLK Jr. Day Essay Contest:  All entries must be 500 words or less. The students must reside in Douglas or Sarpy County in Nebraska, or Mills or Pottawattamie County in Iowa and be enrolled in elementary, middle or high school; home-schooled students are also eligible.

Entries should be sent electronically to liveunited@uwmidlands.org (If possible, please scan hard copies and send to this email address.)

All entries must include the following information (for notification of winners):

Name (first and last), Address, Email address (if available)
Phone number (with area code), Entrant’s grade in school
Name of entrant’s school
Decisions made by the 2013 MLK Essay Committee are final.  All submissions become property of United Way of the Midlands. The first, second and third place essays will be published on United Way’s website: www.uwmidlands.org or by calling Kathy O’Hara at (402) 522-7963.
