UNION PACIFIC EMPLOYEES TO CUT AND TRANSPORT OMAHA’S “OFFICIAL” CHRISTMAS TREE TO THE DURHAM MUSEUM

What: Union Pacific Railroad employees will be locally harvesting and transporting Omaha’s “official” Christmas tree to The Durham Museum. The museum received 58 submissions for tree donations this year.  This year’s tree is a 40 foot-tall blue spruce donated by Carmelita Graeve of Omaha.

When: Monday, November 13, 2017

Note: Employees will begin working at 8 a.m. CST and anticipate cutting the tree about 9 a.m. CST.

Where: 7060 Izard Street

Omaha, NE  68132

Proposed route to The Durham Museum: Head west on Izard Street, Turn left onto 72nd St, Turn left onto Dodge St, Dodge St turns right and becomes S 31st St/Douglas St, Take Douglas St to 10th Street, turn right on 10th Street, Arrive at Durham Museum (801 S. 10th Street)

Why: This annual tradition dates back to the 1930s, when Union Pacific employees would cut Omaha’s Christmas tree from along the railroad right-of-way in the Pacific Northwest and transport the tree to Union Station. This holiday custom returned when Union Station became a museum in the 1970s.  This year, Christmas at Union Station has been designated an official event of the Nebraska 150 Celebration.  The tree will feature Goldenrod flowers and a custom “150” star atop the tree.
